A mix of Thumans Meats & Cheeses together with homemade salads and chili makes the food selection at a new family-owned deli downtown simply Deli-icious.
Culpeper native Gayle Coates Dodson, and daughters Sydney and Raegan , in operating a new carry-out/delivery deli at 128 North Main Street. The shop is the former site of Bella Mia's deli, which closed after the building was damaged by an earthquake in August, 2011.
The building, which is owned by Bill Corbin, was rehabilitated and briefly housed another deli operation before recently becoming available again.
Coates Dodson, who worked for three decades in Safeway's deli operations before retiring, said she has had her eye on the North Main Street location for some time now.
"About 10 years ago I started contemplating opening my own place," Coates Dodson said. "I had just retired from Safeway after 30 years — 25 of it as a deli manager and five years in corporate deli, where I was running 17 stores from up in Landover, Maryland."
Coates Dodson said she had talked to Bella Mia's owner Carmine Maritato about getting into the deli business, and ultimately contacted Corbin about the building after Bella Mia's closed.
The Dodson's got the keys to the building in September, and Deli-icious opened for business Nov. 17.
The shop's menu features Thuman's cheeses and meats, which can be bought in sub or sandwich form on your choice of bread — or they can be purchased by the pound. The deli also carrys Thuman's sizable pickles and their soups — with a different soup featured each day of the week.
In addition to these offerings, the Dodsons make their own chili and salads.
"Our number one seller by far is the homemade chicken salad," Sydney said.
The store makes a veggie sub/sandwich for their vegetarian customers and also offers wraps or lettuce wraps for those who prefer gluten-free.
And the shop does take credit cards.
While the shop is currently open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Coates Dodson said she is open to expanding the hours if her customers desire.
Deli-icious also delivers within the town with a three sandwich minimum, and offers party trays and country ham biscuits for its catering customers, she said.
